I wanted to share a quick tidbit related to our 7th grade Language Arts class today. As part of our read aloud, we practiced how to infer. Inferring is when we use clues and our background knowledge to make a reasonable guess about something. Part of the structure we taught includes the following assumptions:
- We need to find clues to get some answers.
- We need to add those clues to what we already know or have read.
- There can be more than one correct answer.
- We need to be able to support inferences.
With our student’s help, we created a chart that helped us remember how we develop inferences.
TC (Text Clues) + BK (Background Knowledge) = I (Inference)
